FROM THE HELM

By Bob Osborn, SV Pandora, President SDSA

A Loss that is hard to Fathom

It has been difficult for the cruising community to come to grips with the unspeakable violence perpetrated against two of our own, Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry of Simplicity.

For so many of us, making our way to the Caribbean for a winter of cruising is the culmination of a lifelong dream. And for Kathy and Ralph, that dream was cut short,  Over the last week, our community of cruisers, who live a fringe lifestyle little understood by the general public, has been thrust into the public consciousness with this senseless tragedy with reporting by most major news outlets.  This event has shaken our community to its core.

ACTION BEQUIA - GIVING BACK

written by Sue Palmer Wetherald, SV Evening Star

When in Bequia, have you:

  • Enjoyed the flowers and plantings along the clean town walkway?
  • Meandered down Belmont Walkway, taking in the incredible harborside view?
  • Continued down the walkway to the Princess Margaret Trail and explored the peace and quiet of Lower Bay?
  • Tied up at a dive mooring to snorkel or dive - having some of the best underwater experiences in the Caribbean?
  • Been able to properly and conveniently dispose of your trash and recyclables at the disposal site for visiting boats by the dinghy pier?

If so, you have been the beneficiary of some of the many efforts of Action Bequia, a local nonprofit organization which aims to maintain and improve Bequia as a place to work and visit, helping to create local jobs, employment and social cohesion.

TOP TEN MEDICATIONS TO KEEP ON YOUR VESSEL

Written by Drs Benjamin Jack and Terez Malka

Traveling by water is a unique opportunity to disconnect and travel to places that others rarely get to experience. But, being remote from day-to-day life also means being disconnected from medical care and pharmacies.  Here are the top 5 prescription and top 5 over-the-counter medications to consider keeping on board.

Over-the-counter

  1. Pain relief:  sprains, strains, bruises, and abrasions are common in wet, slippery conditions.  Ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and topical muscle and bruise ointments can help keep you comfortable and functional.

  2. Aloe Vera gel:  Alcohol-free, 100% aloe vera gel is the most effective treatment for sunburn, and can also be used on scrapes and minor skin irritations.

THIS MONTH IN PICTURES

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:  ERIN GATLING, CASEY SCHILLING, GUNNER (10) and PAIGE (7)

Boat Name and Type:  Our 2015 Catana 47 "Endless Playtime" was unfortunately dropped in a boat yard during bottom painting.  We are now finally about to get our next boat, an HH 44 due to finish off the assembly line late spring 24.

Our new boat will be registered in Bikini, Marshall Islands.  We plan to pick it up in China from the production line, and sail it to Japan, up to Alaska and down the California coast by Christmas '24 - ending in Southern California, where the kids were born.  We consciously don't make plans any further out than that and leave them really rough to give us room to change them on the fly.

Home Port:  Hampton, VA - also known as the package depot for the Salty Dawgs rally, since we've been volunteering to receive and deliver everyone's packages and mail since 2021.
