MEET OUR NEW RALLY DIRECTOR

Written by Michael Benjamin

We are happy to announce that the Salty Dawgs have a new Rally Director.  Doug Weibel (SV Frolic) will begin serving in that position, commencing immediately.

Douglas (Doug) Weibel is a cruiser, business owner, PhD, pilot, engineer and more, depending on the day.  He, and his wife, Marjorie, have enjoyed cruising over the last eight years, the last 5 aboard their 2014 Antares 44i catamaran, SV Frolic, and have made many friendships through the Salty Dawgs.  Growing up in Colorado, Doug learned to sail small boats at age 14 but never stepped aboard a cruising boat until he and his wife took a week-long ASA class in the San Juan islands in 2015.  Within a couple of years, they bought their first cruising boat, and it changed their lives.  Doug sailed north to Newfoundland and south to Trinidad.

He has sailed in five Salty Dawg rallies and is a member of the OCC.  Doug also freelances for several sailing magazines and has an article in the May edition of Cruising World about staying in shape while cruising, titled “Fit to Cruise”.

Doug has been involved in monitoring the Homeward Bound Rally and will begin his work with the Dawgs focusing on the Downeast and Maritime Rallies.  Please join me in wishing him congratulations and good luck in his new role.  Doug can be reached at [email protected].

Doug will be taking over from Bob Osborn, our immediate past President and our Rally Director for 4 years.  Bob is headed to the Azores and eventually the Mediterranean.  I want to express my gratitude to Bob for a Job well done!  Doug has big shoes to fill.  Bob will continue to be involved with the Dawgs as a Director and as the Antigua Port Captain.
