APP UPDATE - MEMBER AND RALLY MAPS

One of the really nice features of the app is the ability to find other members using the Member Map feature. The location of members is determined in a number of different ways. If your profile has information on tracking using an inReach, Zoleo or PredictWind Datahub, the information from that device will be checked first. If the position has been updated in the last four hours, that position will be used. Next the MMSI of the vessel will be used to get the last reported position from an AIS shore station. The positions of vessels are checked at 7am, 11, 3, 7, midnight. Because AIS position data is expensive, when boats have been inactive for more than 7 days, their positions are only checked once a day.  The most recent app update increased the refresh frequency of positions to ensure the app is displaying the most current positions. The last version of the app, also includes a gold star icon for SDSA board members and others who are likely to have Salty Dawg burgees on board and can be consulted for information.

We often are asked why a position on the Member Map is not current. In most cases it is because there is no AIS shore station nearby. Turning on your tracking (if you have it) is the easiest way to ensure the map is getting your current location, but if you have a PredictWind Datahub and an internet connection, your vessel can become a reporting station and improve coverage not only for your vessel but for those Salty Dawgs nearby.  Besides helping the fleet, many of the vessel tracking websites (like MarineTraffic) will give you a free account if you report positions. One of the sources we use is MyShipTracking, so be sure to include that website to help our reporting.

Besides the Member Map, we also provide rally tracking maps within the app. For offshore rallies, tracking devices are required, so all boats will have position information. We have recently added the PredictWind Datahub as an approved tracking device in addition to Zoleo and inReach. For nearshore rallies, like the Downeast or Maritime rallies, it is optional for participants to have tracking devices. The map for each rally is available by clicking “Rallies” in the lower menu bar, then click on the location icon to bring up the map. Like the member map, the most recent version of the app has increased the refresh frequency of positions.

We hope you'll enjoy using the SD App as we continue making improvements.  We welcome your comments via the Feedback function, which can be found at the bottom of the My Profile screen in the App.
